What is Aromatherapy?
Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils which are expressed from the petal, stem, needle, grass, leaf, root, seed, bark, resin or zest of the plant. In this pure form, the oils are beneficial as a healing mechanism. Scientific research has documented that inhaling the oils delivers the most direct pathway to the brain & into the bloodstream. There are several methods of aromatherapy. Inhalation • Inhale – directly from the bottle or place 1 drop on a tissue. • Micro-diffusion – electric diffuser. • Room spray – 20-30 drops into 250ml water. • Steam inhalation – 5-7 drops into a bowl of hot water, place towel over head, inhale. • Humidifiers – 3-10 drops, add to water, run overnight. • Aroma disk – add a few drops onto a disk. • Room steaming – 3-10 drops in boiling water, use a glass pan. Skin Absorption • Bath – 5-10 drops into tub (mix with milk or vodka – babies up to 18 months/1 drop Lavender). • Hot tub – 3 drops per person. • Body or Face oil – 8-10 drops into 250ml carrier oil. • Body Lotion – 8-10 drops into lotion, mix well. • Body Spray – 30 drops into 250ml water, 30ml witch hazel. • Hair – 8-10 drops into 250ml hair product. Using Essential Oils There are only 2 essential oils which can be safely applied to the skin in neat form – Lavender & Tea Tree. All other oils NEED to be diluted into a carrier oil (Grapeseed – Sweet Almond). It is always recommended that you consult a qualified Aromatherapist. WHY? Some essential oils should not be used if suffering with certain medical conditions (epilepsy, high blood pressure, pregnancy, etc). Some essential oils should not be used in conjunction with Homeopathic remedies. A qualified Aromatherapist will ask you for details of your medical history – allergies, illnesses & this will be done in the strictest confidence. An Aromatherapist will then be able to advise you which oils to AVOID & which oils you may find beneficial. Aromatherapy is a ‘complimentary’ therapy & is not intended to replace any conventional medication. Medication can ONLY be reduced or relinquished with your medical practitioners consent.
